Jazz Festival

Huron Street Pavilion, Downtown, 5-10 PM

Foundry Hall invites you to feel the beats of a variety of Jazz styles as some of the hottest jazz performers in Southwest Michigan take the stage for the first Annual South Haven Jazz Festival. Bands include:  South Haven Men’s Chorus, Pete Wehle, Ivan Akansiima Trio, Blue Shoes and Andrew Fisher Quartet!

Saturday, September 16

Morning

Harbor Walk

South Riverfront Marina, 9 AM

A great way to start your day with a fun Harbor Walk stroll!  Meet at the South Riverfront marina building at 9 am, then walk to the North lighthouse and have fun with our beach glass game stops along the way! Prizes include free lunch tickets to our Riverfront Grill, a $50 gift card and a $100 gift card! Prizes announced at the Riverfront Grill at 11 AM.

Downtown Fun

All day

Enjoy shopping, food and drinks from our locally owned boutiques, shops and eateries.  Special deals await our “Smooth” guests!

Farmers Market

Huron Street Pavilion, 8 AM – 2 PM

A treasure trove of locally grown fruits and vegetables, plus a great selection fresh baked bread and pastries, USDA certified beef and pork products, honey, maple syrup, homemade jams and jellies and other uniquely prepared foods. Items for your home and garden also available!

Community Creation

Riverfront Park, 10 AM – 3 PM

The South Haven Center for the Arts invites you to express your artistic side at a 12 foot by four foot interactive painting mural project that anyone can paint!  Choose a section, and paint yourself into our Smooth Sunset scene, then come back at 3 PM to see how it all comes together!  Donation to the South Haven Center for the Arts appreciated.

Beach Glass Crafting

Riverfront Park, 10 AM – Noon

The South Haven Center for the Arts will have experienced artisans on hand to help you make your own beach glass jewelry.  Choose from one of three beautiful projects with free glass, materials and instructions provided.

Riverfront Grill

Riverfront Park, 11 AM – 1 PM

Have lunch along the water featuring a variety of unique mouth-watering specials from our local chefs!  Relax and enjoy some great food overlooking the beautiful Black River Harbor.  Tickets are $10 and available for purchase at the event.  Here’s what the restaurants and their chefs are planning to serve:

Blue Coast Artist Tour

Self-guided tour from 11 AM – 5 PM

Get the behind-the-scenes look into twelve artist studios and galleries. Oil painting, pottery, wood working, jewelry making, “carved air” metal work, ceramics, and stained, blown and fused glass are all on the tour.  Maps are available at the Visitors Bureau or online at http://www.bluecoastartists.net.

 

Afternoon

Professional Chalk Artists

Riverfront Park, Noon – 3 PM

The South Haven Center for the Arts bring you professional chalk artists Lou Rodriquez, Kayla Wyszinski, Sam Dustin, Kelly Gleeson and Frank Lawson for you watch them transform a section of the sidewalk at the Riverfront Park along the Black River as they take on a South Beach sunset.

Street Musicians

Throughout town, Noon – 5 PM

Catch a variety of fun music performed by local artists on street corners throughout town.

Street Magicians

Throughout town, Noon – 5 PM

Be entertained and amazed with the sleight of hand performing artists on the streets of downtown South Haven, including illusionists John Russell and Mike Rieck!

Swinging 40’s Jazz

Michigan Maritime Museum, 1 PM – 5 PM

Be transported back to the WWII era with jazz music from the 1940’s!   Live music by the Meghan Stahl Duo will be in full swing on the campus from 2:00 – 4:00 pm.  Admission is free to Museum members, regular Museum admission prices apply for non-members.  Or ride the Lindy Lou for only $15 and enjoy the amazing exhibits on the campus, including Lake Michigan’s Call to Duty: the pivotal role Lake Michigan and our region played in WWII!

Beach Olympics

South Beach, 2 PM – 3:30 PM

Join the fun and games as we host the very first South Beach Olympics with the help of Make a Splash Events (makeaspashevents.com).  Fun two-person team games include plank walk, walk the line, beach ball squirt gun races, giant “not beer” pong and others! Grab your special someone, a friend or family member and jump in!  Special Smooth Sunset souvenir for everyone who joins in the fun!

Wine and Sunset Painting

Huron Street Pavilion, Downtown, 3:30 PM – 5:00 PM

Have fun and put your creativity to work!  Join Tipsy Brush Studio and paint your own 12″ x 16″ version of a beautiful sailboat or lighthouse!  And enjoy a glass of wine while you are painting!  Cost is only $30 for the canvas, painting materials, supplies and instruction – wine is an extra charge.  Tickets can be purchased at tipsybrushstudio.com.

The Art of Magic

South Haven Center for the Arts, 11 AM – 4 PM  Gallery Talks 1 – 4 PM

The exhibition highlights the world of performance magic and magicians in America and beyond through early lithography, posters, prints, and other 19th and 20th century historical artifacts on loan to the Center. The Art of Magic uses a wide variety of historical and contemporary artifacts to explore these connections between the art of magic and the magic of art. The exhibition also celebrates magic heritage in our own state of Michigan.  Gallery Talks with James Hagy from 1 – 4 PM.

Evening

Jazz Festival

Mermaids Swimming in the Lake

South Beach, 5:00 PM – 7 PM

No salt, no sharks – but South Haven does have Mermaids! Mermaid Katie and her pod of fellow Sirens will be attending the South Haven Jazz Festival! You can meet them on South Beach on Saturday, September 16 from 5:00 to 7:00pm.  Mermaid Katie and the troupe from Mermaids of the Great Lakes will interact with the public, providing photo opportunities with children; swimming in the shallows of south beach and sharing short stories of their “Lake Michigan underwater observations”. Learn fun facts about mermaids and pirates, play fantastic sea themed games all whilst listening to fantastic sea shanties, mermaid music and pirate ditties.

Drum Circle

South Beach, 6:30 PM – 7 PM

Your chance to participate in the beat of the drum circle and get ready for the sunset to light up the sky.  Musician and instructor Josh Dunigan will be providing hands-on instructions!

Sunset Jams

South Beach, 7 PM – 8:30 PM

Enjoy a breathtaking sunset listening to music on the beach with the Ivan Akansiima Trio.

Smooth Sunset Photo Contest

Instagram Photo Contest!  Winner will receive a $300 Visa Gift Card!  Share the beat of your Smooth Sunset experience! Post a photo of the fun to Instagram using the hashtag #smoothsunsetphoto. Photo must be taken and posted during Smooth Sunset weekend in South Haven, MI, on Saturday, September 16, 2017, between the hours of 9:00 am – 9:00 pm EST.   The winner will be chosen among the top ten who receive the most likes. Final results will be tabulated at 9:00 am on Sunday morning, September 17, 2017, and announced on Instagram at 11:00 am.  The top 10 entries will be featured on the Smooth Sunset event website at southhavenevents.com.   Photo Release Information: By entering this contest, you agree to the contest details and the decisions of the judges and allow the South Haven/Van Buren County Convention and Visitors Bureau to re-post your photo with no compensation.
